My Reflections

The Very First Day of Work :)

After went through days of anticipating on how will the working life be, here I am at United Overseas bank office in a grand building name “Intermark” beside the well-known Hotel “Double Tree” by Hilton. After squeezing like a sandwich in LRT all the way from Wangsa Maju, I told myself it will be a remarkable day in my life. Words can’t describe my excitement, it’s feel good to work on such a nice, high-tech and grand building.

I met a new friend name Chia Wei at Merana UOB where we suppose to gather at the first day for a short briefing. Apparently, he seems to be the only one who works at UOB in Vista Tower, Intermark as me. I decided to introduce him as I believe his name will appear somehow in my intern journey. He is a local, currently pursuing his study in Macquarie University, Australia. He came back to Malaysia for summer break and decided to do intern voluntarily, who anticipate looking to get some working experience before graduate as me. He has become my first friend to work in this new environment. As an intern, both of us were rather lost at the first day. We went to another side of the building and decided to call our supervisor to pick us up at the lobby. After few minutes of waiting, Chia Wei realize that we are at the wrong location (not at the Vista Tower), and we quickly head our way towards there. Luckily, my supervisor, Low Wai Teng is still there welcoming us with a big warm smile. She led us up to 25th floor where our office located at.

I am working in Entity Reporting and Control department which is essential department for a bank to operate properly. As a first day intern, I have to say that I love the working environment which is quiet and clean. Miss Low introduces us to our colleague and I met my department manager, Ms Neo Seow Yen, the head of Entity Reporting and Control who has a “serious” look lady.  Most of my colleagues have working experience in the finance department for more than 20 years and still counting on. They told me that it was their passion and the strong motivation that continuously drive them to work harder and contribute more to the company. Miss Low bring me walk around the office and basically the office is not too small but comfortable to contain 30 + employee. There was two meeting room at the end of office where I hope I have the chance go in  meeting with my colleague! The, I was placed in a cubical where my personal table, chair, drawer, PC is all prepared.

First day is always started with excitement and soon, the reality turns me down. I was given the job task of checking the daily journal listing which involve tone of figure and what made me stunned was there were at least 300 transaction take places per day. Maybe not familiar with the job tasks yet thus my speed is super slow as I was so particular to each detail. After lunch, I was asked to join the GST meeting by my supervisor. Miss Low ask me not to scare as it is only a small informal meeting with the team and hopefully I can write down something useful for me as I will be helping to key in supplier who register under GST in one month times. Out of blue, I join the meeting with full of question mark and ended up writing down some note that I was unsure.  At the end of first day, I was able to complete one stake of the journal list which I personally think I can do even faster once I fully understand. All in all, it was a great experience for me and I wish to have more challenging work task in the next 49 days.

PS: I was amaze by the view from my office! I did take few photos of the stunning view for sharing :)
