Week 7 & 8

Good New v.s. Bad News {Welcoming Happy Chinese New Year and farewell to my partner}

(09/02/15 - 20/02/15)

     Chinese New Year is approaching; the scenario in the department is changing. Well, maybe the colleagues are finish with year end report, they are rather free than last month. As welcoming Chinese New Year, our department went out for the first “Lou Sang “ session with their  ex-boss (head of finance) at a Chinese Restaurant at Ampang. It was the first time I dining together with my senior colleagues, they are rather caring and fun as all girl seat together sure the whole table is full of chatting and laughter. Sadly, there is no group photo taken but !! The dishes photo is taken :D

Besides that, we are asked to handmade some CNY Tang Long through creativity. Miss Joey research some Angpao decoration and gather three of us seat down together to make the ang pao tang long. We have a lot of fun as doing something rather than paperwork. The end products are nice and everyone in the department loves it. It definitely became way for colleague to memories us when we end our internship. Here is some of the photo of the process of Tang Long making :)

Apart from doing some decoration, I was teach to tally the daily Bank Negara Malaysia Reconciliation Statement at the beginning of February. There is a lot unknown transaction as I not familiar for the statement as there will have some sudden payment out last minute and did not record in the bank statement. Besides that, I did not receive the email send by BNM which indicate on which amount is outstanding throughout the day as I am not a full timer who in charge this reconciliation task. It is important to make sure the amount is tally in the system at the end of the day thus I need to finish it speedy with no mistake. Even though it is the most challenging task but somehow I like it as through this task I can interact with my colleague and I really appreciate their help as without their help I couldn’t finish it and learn from it.

        Nonetheless, the closer Chinese New Year is, the more quiet my office is as most of the colleague takes leave and the office is fairly quiet. I was quite relax as not much work to do apart from reconciliation statement, thus I approach my colleagues for job tasks. She passes me some document to file in the file name Malaysian Master Tax Guide Manual and I completed it within 2 days, which rather impressed her. It did boring when come to filling but I was rather interest in studying the content of it. When it comes to Money Laundering, I was really keen studying it as I do learn money laundering in Banking Law last semester. Apart from money laundering, I do read through GST as well as income taxes, I feel more equitable with the knowledge after reading through it. I believe it will help me in my future career as a banker.

        The sad things is Chia Wai is going to end his internship within this week, he was generous enough to treat all the mentor including us for a lunch at “You Ku Qi”. He definitely one of the generous friend I ever meet. His always take his job task seriously and never drag to another day. I learn to be efficiency as him and he is willingly helping up colleagues which is one of the characteristic I look up for.  I would like to take this opportunity to thanks him for his companionship for the 8 weeks and I wish him all the best in his future undertaking.

Nice Food Serve but the price is slightly above average.
Well, food is not the matter, the people is the matter :)
Key Learning:

Decision Making
The internship had grown me into a better decision maker. I would like to thanks my supervisor in trusting me in what I do, for instance, she let me decorate the office through my creativity and innovation. I would say the hardest part of decision making is accepting the risk as well as facing the consequences. I had to take into account of everything for instance where I shall I put the decoration and will it block people view and so on. Hence, I have grown more mature to make better decision and learnt how to deal with the risk and facing consequences.

Critical Thinking

I had developed a better critical thinking skill when performing Bank Reconciliation Statement.  Since I am not familiar with the Bank Negara Malaysia transaction and where does the missing figure went, most of the time I need to think instead of just asking as I believe it is quite annoying if I asking my colleague every minute. I learnt to be more independent and learnt to brainstorm to find out solutions with the pieces of I have.
